Our tribute to Gordon

Created by Gillian 2 years ago

I first met Gordon after a morning service at Penketh Methodist and during the time I knew him, he became a much loved and valued friend. A true gentleman, his love for his family was evident in every conversation, as was his faith.

Gordon's positive attitude, his bright and cheerful outlook and his energy and enthusiasm for life were a constant inspiration to us. He made the biggest challenges seem insignificant compared to his determination and perseverance. When the pandemic closed the church building, Gordon was very disappointed but he adapted brilliantly to the situation by using his technology to watch the virtual church services and to keep in touch with his church family.

Gordon phoned me regularly and whenever he spoke to me, he always showed a genuine interest in my family. On one occasion, I remember being stunned when Gordon reminded me of the precise date of my daughter Sarah's university exam results, that I had very casually mentioned to him more than two weeks previously. I was amazed and joked that he knew my calendar a lot better than I did but that's the sort of sincere and caring man he was.

Gordon would also regularly ask me about my elderly Dad following his recent stroke and greatly amused us all by referring to him as 'a young man.' When I explained that my Dad was actually eighty-three, Gordon replied, “Yes that's what I mean. He's just a young man.”

Gordon ended every phone call by saying that he would keep in touch and he kept that promise even on the day that he was admitted to hospital. He was a true and loyal friend and it was a privilege to have known him. We will always remember Gordon and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.
